How our AS/400 consulting works Five steps, from the first review to a plan your team carries out with us

  1. Week 1Assess requirementsWe inventory the programs, the data and the people, and talk to each department that uses the i.
  2. Week 2Agree the modelA project, a team, or managed IBM i services.
  3. Weeks 3 to 4Design the routeFor each call stream: keep, modernize, connect, move or retire.
  4. Each releaseDevelop and testEvery changed program is tested on real records against the old one.
  5. OngoingSupportWe run what stays on the i, and report on the plan every month.

When AS/400 consulting is the right start And when you can go straight to the work

A good fit when

  • Nobody can say what all the programs on your IBM i do
  • The board is asking whether to replace the AS/400
  • Several vendors have pitched different routes, and they disagree

Go straight to the work when

  • You know the change you need: hire RPG programmers
  • You've decided to stay, and need it supported
  • One integration is stuck: build it

Our AS/400 consulting services in detail What each part covers, and what you have when it's done

IBM i technical and database assessment

We list every program, file and job on your IBM i, follow every call, menu and message to see which programs run together, and check which ones ran in the last 90 days. We review the Db2 for i database, the security setup, and the hardware and license terms.

You end with a map of what runs, what's dead weight, and where the risk sits.

Business impact analysis

Next, we ask what the IBM i costs each department: the order desk learning green screens for weeks, the close waiting on one batch job, the two people who know the code. That turns a technical inventory into a business case.

Choosing a route for each part of the system

There are four routes for an AS/400, and most companies use more than one. Stay and extend, for what works and rarely changes. Rehost, to run the same IBM i in someone else's data center. Convert by tool, which is fast on paper but produces code nobody on your team wrote. Rebuild stream by stream, slower to start, with every stream proved against the old system.

AI is proven at reading and documenting old code, and unproven at converting it end to end (Gartner, October 2026). We plan with that in mind.

Making the IBM i ready for AI

42% of IBM i teams now name AI a top concern, up 24 points in two years (Fortra, 2026 IBM i Marketplace Survey). The records that matter most sit on the i, behind green screens and nightly batch jobs. Opening them through APIs, or putting an agent like Agent 400 on the screens, lets your AI projects reach them.

iSeries managed services

For what stays on the IBM i, we run it: support, monitoring, PTFs, backups, batch operations and changes, with a monthly report on the system and the plan.

Questions about AS/400 consulting What IT leaders ask us about their IBM i

What is AS400 iSeries?

It's IBM's midrange business platform, launched as the AS/400 in 1988, renamed iSeries in 2000, System i in 2006, and IBM i in 2008. It combines the operating system, the Db2 database and security in one, and it's known for running for years without going down.

What does an AS/400 consulting company do?

It helps you manage, change, modernize and support the IBM i. That covers assessments, RPG development, modernization, integration and APIs, migration, performance tuning, security and managed services.

Why hire AS/400 consulting services?

To get a complete outside view of a system your team is too busy to step back from. A good consultant finds what's running, what it costs, and the lowest-risk route for each part.

Can the IBM i connect to modern cloud applications?

Yes. The IBM i can serve and call REST APIs, and its data can flow to cloud platforms, ERPs, CRMs and BI tools, without replacing the business logic that already works.

How can AI help with IBM i applications?

AI is good at reading old code, writing down the rules it carries, generating tests, and working the green screens for your people. It's not yet proven at converting a whole system to a new language.

How do AS/400 consultants reduce modernization risk?

By mapping every dependency before anything moves, moving one call stream at a time, testing each new program against the old one on real records, and keeping the old system running until the numbers match.
