AS/400 migration services, from the plan to the switch-over Applications, data, batch jobs and infrastructure, moved without stopping the business

Plan the migrationAS/400 migration consulting: what moves, where, in what order, and at what risk.
Move the IBM i to the cloudRehost the same system on cloud Power servers, and retire your hardware.
Rebuild applications off itRPG migration to .NET or Java on Azure, AWS or Google Cloud, stream by stream.
Move the dataDb2 for i to SQL Server, PostgreSQL or a cloud database, reconciled row by row.
Run both, then switchOld and new side by side until real records match, then the switch.

How our AS/400 migration works Five steps, from the assessment to a switch-over that keeps the business running

  1. Weeks 1 to 2Assess requirementsPrograms, data, batch jobs, interfaces and hardware, and the route for each part.
  2. Week 3Agree the modelA fixed-price stream, a team, or a managed migration with support after it.
  3. Each streamDesign and developThe target set up, the code rebuilt or moved, the data mapped.
  4. Each streamQA and testingThe same transactions run on both systems, and every result is compared.
  5. After switch-overSupport and maintainWe support the new system, and the old one until it retires.

When an AS/400 migration is the right call And when modernizing in place would serve you better

Migrate when

  • Your hardware lease or support contract is ending
  • The people who can change the RPG are leaving, and you can't replace them
  • The business needs changes the IBM i makes slow and costly

Modernize in place when

  • The system works and the problem is reaching its data
  • A part rarely changes: leave it where it runs well
  • Someone offers to convert the whole system by tool in months

Our AS/400 migration services in detail What each kind of move involves, and what you have after it

AS/400 migration consulting

A migration starts with knowing what you have. We inventory every program, file, batch job and interface, follow the calls to see which programs run together, and group them into call streams: every program one business task calls, start to finish.

Then we choose a route for each stream, with its cost, its risk and the order it moves in. Most companies keep some of the IBM i, move some of it, and retire a surprising amount.

AS/400 cloud migration: rehosting the IBM i

Rehosting moves the same IBM i, with the same programs and data, from your machine room to Power servers in a cloud data center, such as IBM Power Virtual Server. Your hardware and its upkeep go away, and the cloud provider handles the servers.

It's the quickest move, but the RPG and the skills problem stay. We plan it as a first step when the hardware deadline is close.

Migrating AS/400 applications to Azure, AWS or Google Cloud

When you want off the platform, we rebuild one call stream at a time in .NET or Java on Azure, AWS or Google Cloud. AI agents read the RPG and write the rules down in plain language first, and engineers write the new code and sign every change.

We don't hand you code from a converter that nobody can read. Gartner finds AI proven at reading old code and unproven at converting it end to end (October 2026).

Db2 for i data migration

We map every physical and logical file to the target database, convert packed decimals, dates and EBCDIC text, and reconcile the moved data row by row against the source. Batch jobs move to a scheduler on the new platform, with the same order and checks.

Proving each stream before it switches

Before a stream switches over, the same transactions run on both systems and every field written to the database is compared. One mismatch stops the release.

Until then, the IBM i stays the system of record, and nothing changes for the people who use it.

Questions about AS/400 migration What IT leaders ask us before a migration

How is AS400 different from IBM i?

They're the same platform under different names. IBM launched the AS/400 in 1988, renamed it iSeries in 2000, System i in 2006, and IBM i in 2008. Programs written for the AS/400 still run on IBM i today.

What are the common ways to migrate an AS400 to the cloud?

Rehosting the IBM i on cloud Power servers, converting the code with a tool, rebuilding the applications on a new stack, replacing them with a package, or a mix. Most companies use more than one, part by part.

Is AS400 outdated?

Not as a platform. IBM i is current, runs on modern Power servers and supports SQL, APIs and open-source languages. What ages is the RPG written decades ago, and the shrinking number of people who can change it.

What is the AS400 used for?

Core transactions: order entry, billing, inventory, warehouse, payroll, policies and claims. It's common in manufacturing, distribution, retail, banking and insurance, where it rarely goes down.

How long does an AS400 migration to Azure, AWS or Google Cloud take?

Rehosting can take weeks. Rebuilding takes longer and depends on the number of call streams, so we move one stream at a time and the business sees the first one live long before the last.
