How our AS/400 modernization works Five steps, from discovery to a system your team can change again

  1. Week 1Assess and discoverEvery program, file and call, and which ones the business uses most.
  2. Week 2Set the strategyWhich layers to modernize first, by the cost of leaving them as they are.
  3. Each streamImplementRules written down, then code, data and screens changed, one call stream at a time.
  4. Each streamTest and validateThe modernized programs run on real records, and every result is compared with the old.
  5. After releaseSupport and optimizeWe support the changed system and tune what runs slowly.

When AS/400 modernization is the right fit And when a migration off the platform makes more sense

Modernize when

  • The IBM i is reliable, and the problem is changing it
  • Other systems and AI projects can't reach its data
  • New hires take weeks to learn the green screens

Migrate instead when

  • The business has decided to leave the platform
  • Your hardware or license terms force a move soon
  • Almost nobody left can read the RPG, even modernized

Our AS/400 modernization services in detail What each part covers, and what's easier for your team after it

AS/400 modernization consulting

Not every part of an IBM i needs modernizing. We find the call streams the business changes most and the ones other systems need to reach, and start there. The rest can stay as it is.

AI is proven at understanding and improving an old system where it runs (Gartner, October 2026), which is why we modernize in place before anyone talks about moving.

RPG modernization

Code written in RPG III or fixed-format RPG IV is hard for newer developers to read. Our RPG modernization converts it to free-form RPGLE, breaks large programs into ILE modules and service programs, and replaces native file reads with embedded SQL.

Before any of it, AI agents read each program and write its rules down in plain language, and an engineer reviews and signs every change. That's how RapidIT works.

Db2 for i database upgrade

Many IBM i databases are still defined in DDS, with the rules held in the programs. We move them to SQL tables with keys, constraints and views, so other tools can query the data safely and the database protects itself.

AS/400 APIfication and UI modernization

REST APIs over the programs other systems need let your portals, partners and AI agents reach the IBM i without screen scraping or file drops.

For the people who use it, we replace the green screens they use most with browser and mobile pages. Order desk staff stop paging through three screens to check an order.

  • APIs secured and logged
  • Web screens for the busiest tasks
  • Green screens kept for the rest until they're needed

DevOps on IBM i

We put your RPG source in Git, set up builds and automated tests, and move changes between environments the same way as the rest of your software. Changes stop depending on one person's library list.

Questions about AS/400 modernization What IT leaders ask us before a modernization

What are the benefits of IBM i and AS/400 modernization?

Code newer developers can read, data other systems can reach, screens new staff learn quickly, and changes that ship faster with less risk. You keep the reliability of the IBM i while removing what makes it hard to change.

How long does an IBM i modernization project take?

It depends on the number of call streams and how far each one goes. We modernize one stream at a time, so the first is in use in weeks and the rest follow in the order that pays most.

How much does it cost to outsource AS/400 modernization?

It depends on the scope, the size of the code, and the layers you modernize. A one-week audit gives us enough to quote a fixed price per stream or a monthly team.

Our earlier modernization didn't work out. Can you help?

Yes. We review what was done, compare the modernized programs with the old ones on real records, and fix or redo the parts that don't match.

How does outsourcing IBM i modernization work?

We start with your goals and an audit, then propose a fixed price or a monthly team. Our engineers work with yours, and every change is reviewed and tested against the old system before release.

Bring the AS/400 program everyone is afraid to change

We'll write down the rules it carries and show you how we'd modernize it.
